I’m in shock that it’s August and I’m having to think about school starting in three weeks! Yikes! While I love having my kids home over the summer, there’s always a feeling of excitement about the new school year. My youngest daughter’s totally looking forward to it.
She’s a first grader that has ADHD and is a great reader. She loves art and PE, but has little patience for writing. She knows how to form her letters just fine, but hates taking the time to write neatly. So, I thought I might make some mini composition books so she can practice her writing at home in short sessions.
To make these DIY mini composition books I trimmed the holes off of 4 sheets of loose leaf lined paper. The papers ended up about 7 3/8 inches wide.
Then I trimmed those sheet in half horizontally, so that I ended up with eight 7 3/8 x 5 1/4 inch pieces of paper. Then I folded each one in half so that they open on the right.
Next I cut a 7 3/8 x 5 1/4 inch piece of patterned scrapbook paper for the cover and folded it in half. You could use any type of paper you’d like, though thick cardstock works best as a cover.
To bind the pages and cover I used the new Staple Board from We R Memory Keepers. I love that the staples come in three sizes, and four different colors. Plus, you can staple anywhere without worrying about the reach of the stapler.
Check out the video below showing an overview of the tool, and how to use it to make these easy DIY mini composition books.
I chose not to decorate the covers too much since my daughter will be using these frequently (I hope). I used some school-themed papers from the Alphabet Soup II collection by Jillibean Soup.
You can leave them as is, or decorate them to your hearts content. It’s up to you!
These little guys are a great back-to-school project, or are perfect for notes, lists, travel, journaling, or planning. What would you make them for?
Awesome!! I made a couple of these the other day!!
Oh I so NEED this one! : )
