craft room storage & organization: part 1 + a giveaway!

The start of a new year always motivates me to get organized and set some goals. Some of those goals are crafty, of course. And what really motivates me to get in my craft space and make stuff, is getting my stash organized and under control. I shared some tips and storage options for craft room organization on Studio 5 recently, and along with that I’ve got a giveaway!

Check out an overview of those organization tips and storage options below, then scroll down and find out how to enter the giveaway.

This post is part 1 of 2. If you’d like to see part 2, CLICK HERE.

Here are three steps to getting your craft stash under control so you’ll feel inspired to create some projects this year:

Dump & Purge

Start by getting all your supplies out and dumping them onto a table, or the floor. You may need to do this in sections if you have a lot of supplies. Make a “keep” pile, a “give away” pile and a “trash/recycle” pile. Before deciding to keep something, ask yourself the following questions: 1) Do I really love it? 2) Have I used it in the last 6 months? 3) Will I use it in the next 6 months?

Generally you won’t use it at all if you haven’t used it within a year, so give yourself permission to give it away to someone else, or to get rid of it.

Sort & Organize

Once you have a stash that you love and know you will use, sort and organize it into groups that will work with your creative process. For example, if you create projects based on a color scheme, sort things that way; if you create seasonal projects, sort items by season, etc. You may need to organize parts of your stash in different way, depending on how you create.

Contain & Place

Now to the fun part! Having your items sorted and organized lets you see how many containers and what types you need. Think about what kind of containers you prefer–open vs closed, visible vs nonvisible, stylish vs functional–and then get to work containing your supplies and placing them where they will be most useful to you. Things you use most often might be better to place on your workspace within arm’s reach.

Stylish Storage Options for Crafters

One of the tips I shared on Studio 5 is to think outside the “storage box” for fun and stylish storage options for your home office, work space, or craft room. Crate Paper has a darling line of craft and office storage supplies that I shared on the air and I’d love to share some of them with you too!

This wire grid panel comes with some hardware for hanging, or you can place it on your work surface and lean it up against a wall. Use S hooks and binder clips for hanging mason jars, baskets, bins, tools, metal rods, and so much more.

Place small embellishments or office supplies in this beautiful ceramic organizer. Why spend months searching vintage markets and yard sales for a vintage muffin tin when you can grab one of these lovelies?

Store stickers, die cuts, and ephemera in these darling berry containers. I love the vintage-inspired look of these functional and stylish baskets.

These would be great to keep out on your work surface filled with your favorite new embellishments to keep them fresh in your mind so you remember to use them on a project.

I know sometimes I’m more likely to remember what I have in my stash if I can see it.
