Happy Friday friends! I’m so excited for the warmer weather because that means spending more time outdoors at barbecues, picnics, and parties. One popular warm weather party theme that I predict will be even more popular this year is the luau, polynesian party, or…a Moana party!
This Disney movie is a favorite among families, and it’s a versatile party theme that can be used for both boys and girls. Recently I had the pleasure of sharing some DIY Moana party ideas on a local lifestyle TV show, Studio 5 (CLICK HERE to see the video of my segment). I used some of my favorite crafting tools, and some basic supplies that are readily available, such as poster board and dollar store decorations. Today I’ll share some of these ideas with you, along with some affiliate links so you can grab supplies, and I’ll follow this up with another post next week with some more DIY Moana party decor. (CLICK HERE for part 2 of my Moana Party Ideas.)
1. DIY Tropical Flower Backdrop
These giant flower decorations will be the showstopper at your party! To make these, you’ll need the following supplies:
1. poster board
2. We R Memory Keepers Template Studio Starter Kit
3. We R Memory Keepers Flower Template Guide
3. hot glue gun
4. twine
Start by following the instructions included with the Template Studio, and trimming your poster board to the size you need based on the size flower you’re making. Then use the flower template guide to trim and score the poster board as explained in the instructions.
Accordion fold the score lines, and hot glue them to assemble the flower as explained in the instructions. Create and layer different sizes of flowers for a fuller look.
Create a flower center by cutting fringe into a 3×12 inch strip of paper with scissors, rolling it up, and hot gluing it to secure it.
Then, bend down and curl the strips to create a full effect. Hot glue it inside the middle of the flower.
Make various size flowers and hang them together in odd groups to create a stunning tropical flower backdrop for your Moana party, luau, or Polynesian-style event.
2. Moana Spiral Wall Decor
This Moana-style spiral decor was easy to make with a sheet of poster board, a pencil and some scissors.
I found an image of one online, and then traced in on the back of the poster board. The great thing about this shape is it isn’t supposed to be perfectly straight, so there’s lots of room for imperfection!
3. Grass Table Skirt
This time of year is the perfect time to find luau and tropical themed party decor at party supply stores, discount stores, and dollar stores. I was thrilled to find quite a few cute luau supplies perfect for my Moana themed party at Dollar Tree. Some of them I altered slightly to fit my vision for this party, including this grass table skirt.
After searching unsuccessfully for something like this, I decided to assemble one using grass hula skirts I found at Dollar Tree. I simply tied them together, and then taped them up around the edge of the table. Easy peasy, and super cheap!
4. Polynesian-Style Banner
Another great item I found at Dollar Tree is a Polynesian-style banner. Most of the pieces of the banner fit with my theme and color scheme, so I disassembled it and took out the pieces I didn’t need. Then I punched out some letters with my Alphabet Punch Board to say “You’re Welcome” and added them with the pieces I kept.
Are you singing this song in your head now? You’ll probably be singing it all day. You’re welcome. 😉
A Moana-themed party is great for girls and boys, and can be done easily and inexpensively. With so many luau supplies out in stores, now’s the time to plan one. Thanks for stopping by today. Be sure to check back next week when I’ll share more Moana party ideas!
Fabulous!!!!
